Proper Wardrobe for Men

Be prepared for any situation by keeping a proper wardrobe for men in your closet.
By knowing what is acceptable to wear for different occasions, you will always look fashionable and stylish.

Basics of a Proper Wardrobe for Men
Always have the basics hanging in your closet. That way, you won't have to search for something to wear at the very last minute before you need to attend an event. What is considered acceptable can varying depending on the occasion, but by keeping the essentials on hand, you will always be prepared and have the necessary pieces in your wardrobe. Basic pieces to own include:
• Conservative suit in a dark color
• White dress shirt
• Khakis
• Polo shirt
• Tie in a solid color
• Blazer or sports coat
• Pullover sweater
• Button-down long sleeve shirt

What to Wear and When
Here are some of the more common scenarios you'll likely face, detailing what you may want to wear in each situation. A proper wardrobe for men will have something suitable for each occasion.

Job Interview
So you get called for a job interview and you don't have a clue what to wear. Don’t panic since you most likely will have the basic components already in your wardrobe. For an interview, you will want to follow a professional dress code. This means a suit and tie. The suit should be conservative and be a dark color. A solid white dress shirt is perfect for an interview. You do not want to wear anything flashy or extreme. A polished, professional look is always appropriate for an interview.

First Date
You want to make a great first impression on your date, so dressing accordingly is very important. If you plan on going to a restaurant, there are several things to keep in mind. Different restaurants have certain codes of dress to follow. If you are going somewhere casual, then a pair of khakis and nice button shirt works fine. However, if you are going to an upscale restaurant, you will need to be dressed in a certain way in order to look acceptable. In general, a pair of dress pants, a shirt with a collar and a blazer is appropriate for an upscale establishment. A shirt and tie is usually required, so if you are unsure of a particular restaurant's dress code, call first so you know what to wear and impress your date.

Picnic
If you get invited to a summer picnic or outdoor party, a casual style of dress is proper. Attire consisting of a polo shirt and slacks makes for a great look that is casual but chic. Wear light materials such as linen or cotton in warmer months and if the nights get cooler, bring a jacket or sweater along that matches your outfit.

Black Tie Affair
Often times you get invited to a special event or wedding that requires black tie attire. If this style of dress is required, it is often stated directly on the invitation. If you are unsure, it is appropriate to ask your host beforehand what dress is required. Black tie attire consists of a black dinner jacket and trousers. A cummerbund or waistcoat is acceptable as well. A black bow tie is worn with a white dress shirt. Patent leather or highly polished dress shoes should be worn as well.

Funeral
When attending a funeral, you should be dressed tastefully. Proper funeral attire is a conservative dark suit and a white or light colored shirt with a subtle patterned or solid color tie.

Final Thoughts
In order to dress properly, keep in mind the occasion and what is required. By keeping the basics in your closet, you will always have on hand something suitable to wear and will look fashionable no matter what situation you are in. The key to being stylish knows what is considered acceptable and always being dressed appropriately for the event you plan to attend.
